Seipone Exhibits Demand Attention in the Middle East

Seipone Debut at SAASTEC Conference 2005

Umhlanga, Durban: Seipone Exhibits made its debut at the SAASTEC conference hosted by the Old Mutual-MTN Sciencentre by lobbying for the kind of transformation that is targeted at all learners.

By taking along a few of its interactive, edutainment exhibits ranging from a high-tech touch screen display to jumbo sized enlargements of toys to be featured at the forthcoming
“Play to Learn” toys exhibition
(by MTN Sciencentre, Cape Town), Seipone summoned the interest of delegates, over a hundred of which had convened for the event, and gave physical evidence that well thought out exhibit design and interactivity are the best tools to relay educational messages.

In keeping with the theme of the conference, “Education and Change through Science Centres”, Seipone took to the

platform on the second day of the proceedings to discuss how critical it is that stakeholders of science centers recognize transformation from the perspective of learners.”

“Science centers have an excellent opportunity to facilitate change because they interact with learners, promote creative thinking and explore the curriculum”, “Our belief is that by seeking intimate knowledge of township, rural and urban South Africa , educational facilities will be empowered to structure their services and messages to appeal to all South Africans.”

Dirk Durnez revealed effective methods to prepare learners for an ever-changing world , emphasizing the importance of self esteem. He clarified that, “Exhibits that include indigenous knowledge and cultural games show learners from previously disadvantaged sectors that their world matters too - thereby giving them the confidence to explore.”

Promoting the use of characteristically South African elements in exhibit design, Seipone unveiled its “Spaza Newspaper” exhibit. The exhibit encourages one to visit the Seipone spaza shop (kiosk or tuck-shop typically found in the township) where instead of buying one; a newspaper is designed from scratch. The resulting newspaper, which includes a front page picture of the exhibit user is personalized and printed out to take home.

The exhibit remained a part of the conference, which ran between the 16th and 18th of November, and attracted the attention of delegates ranging from decision makers and foreign delegates to school teachers.
